Squirrel removal in Knoxville, TN

Daytime scratching, mostly at dawn and dusk, is the classic squirrel pattern. One-way exclusion plus sealing every chewed gap is what keeps them out. Trapping without sealing just makes room for the next one.

Is it a squirrel, a rat, or a raccoon?

The clock usually tells you. Squirrels are active in daylight, and they're loudest early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Rats and raccoons are nighttime animals.

Here's how the sounds tend to break down:

What you hearWhenLikely animal
Quick racing and scratching across joists, rolling soundsEarly morning, late afternoonSquirrel
Light, fast scurrying, gnawing inside wallsNightRat or mouse
Heavy walking, thumping, rummagingNightRaccoon

Droppings help confirm it. Rodents leave small pellets along edges and paths. Squirrel droppings are larger than a mouse's and often scattered near the nest. Raccoons leave big piles in one spot. If you're still not sure, how do I know what animal is in my attic walks through it.

Where do squirrels get into Knoxville homes?

Wherever soft wood or a weak vent sits within jumping distance of a tree. Knoxville's mature oak and maple canopy gives squirrels plenty of launch points.

The usual entry spots:

  • Fascia and soffit corners. Squirrels chew a starter hole where two boards meet, especially if the wood is already soft or rotted.
  • Gable vents. Thin screening or louvers that have pulled loose are easy to chew past.
  • Ridge vents. Damaged or poorly fitted ridge vents give access along the top of the roof.
  • Roof returns and gaps at dormers. The small joints where roof lines meet often have a gap a squirrel can widen.
  • Overhanging limbs. Not an entry point, but the path. A limb that brushes the roof gives squirrels a highway.

Look for a fresh round hole with chewed edges, often near a corner. Leaf nests in nearby trees are another clue that roof traffic is likely.

What damage do squirrels cause?

Quieter damage than a raccoon, but it can be more dangerous. Squirrels chew constantly to keep their teeth worn down.

  • Wiring. Chewed insulation on electrical wiring is the biggest concern. Exposed wires in an attic full of dry insulation are a real hazard.
  • Wood. Gnawed rafters, joists, and trim, plus the entry hole itself, which lets water in.
  • Insulation. Squirrels tunnel through and pile it up for nests, which cuts its value.
  • Stored items. Boxes and anything soft in the attic become nesting material.

Fall and early spring are the busiest nesting times. If you hear them every morning, they're likely nesting, not passing through.

How does squirrel exclusion work?

The goal is to get every squirrel out and make sure none can get back in. The process:

  1. Find every entry point. The main hole is obvious. The second and third ones are what cause callbacks.
  2. Seal the secondary gaps first, leaving the main entry open.
  3. Install a one-way exclusion device on the main entry. Squirrels can leave but can't get back in.
  4. Confirm the attic is empty, then remove the device and seal the last opening permanently with chew-resistant metal.
  5. Deal with tree access. If a limb still touches the roof, trimming it keeps the next squirrel from testing your repairs.

In nesting season, young in the attic change the timing. We don't seal over babies.

For more on sealing methods and materials, see wildlife exclusion. If insulation is damaged or full of nesting debris, wildlife cleanup covers that.

What drives the cost of squirrel removal?

Mostly the number of entry points and how hard they are to reach. The main drivers:

  • How many gaps need sealing, not just the main hole.
  • Roof height and pitch.
  • Wood repair on chewed or rotted fascia and soffit.
  • Whether there are young in the attic.
  • Tree trimming for limbs bridging to the roof.
  • Wiring or insulation damage that needs follow-up.

FAQ

Why not just trap the squirrels?+

Because trapping doesn't close the hole. In a neighborhood full of squirrels, another one finds the opening fast.

Can squirrels chew through what you seal with?+

Exclusion uses chew-resistant metal at the points squirrels attack. The weak spots on most roofs are wood corners and vent screens, which is exactly where the metal goes.

Is it a fire risk if squirrels chewed my wiring?+

Chewed wiring insulation can be a hazard. Have an electrician look at any damage we find.
